The iPhone has great open source applications, which are very easy to install and use. Most of these are free. To jailbreak your iPhone 1.1.4 use Ziphone.
If you made the mistake of installing iPhone 2.0 from iTunes 7.7 check this link
Pros: Availability of tons of awesome, useful, and fun applications
Cons: Yahoo Mail and Youtube will not work anymore. However, these can be replaces by gmail and MixTube which in my opinion are much better. Use iLiberty to fix these problems
Check this video to add bookmarks to home screen
My favorite bookmarks are:
wikipedia.comoki.com
google.com/m#search
amazon.com/gp/aw/h.html/102-2182640-9005737

Installation of packages
By the default ziphone will provide a repository called Installer which is pretty well maintained with updates, and new programs. Within Installer there is another repository called Cydia. I have found in both excellent results. Cydia is mostly focused on development.
To get the best of the best from these repositories, must check section by section and pick your favorite applications, there is no harm to try them because these can be uninstalled anytime.
Here are the applications I have found very useful:
Customization: Dock, SummerBoard, BigBoss Wallpaper Pack, MacBook Air Keyboard
Media: MxTube, iPhone Video recorder, VoiceNotes, Snapture
Toys: Waves, Drummer, Sketches, Capture
Office: moleskine, MobileFinder
Scientific: HP-11C
Open Source: Community Sources, BSD Subsystem, Term-vt100, OpenSSh
Modify icons in your home screen
Icons are saved in: /private/var/mobile/Library/WebClips
Create a png icon 29×29 (must be png !! )
Connect to your iPhone using ssh or another program
Replace icon
Reboot iphone

Make calls using “fring”

Where are the pictures located in iPhone?
Backup music
- ssh to your iPhone
- Copy /Media/itunes_control/Music into computer using the command scp
Use Nautilus to browse files in your iPhone (must have your iPhone SSH)
In the address bar type: sftp://root@iphone_IP
To might also want to modify icons, these are located mainly in two directories:
/Applications (programs installed)
/private/var/mobile/Library/Webclips (bookmarks added to home screen)
Use GIMP to customize those icons, and make sure their extension is png and the size is 59×59 pixels. To fix the size in GIMP: open the png file, go to Image/Scale Image, and in Image Size fix the Width and the Height to 59
